What is the PUBG Global Championship?
The PUBG Global Championship (PGC) is a tournament organized by PUBG Corp, which is entertained annually as the ultimate event of the Competitive PUBG season and honors the official PUBG Global Champions for the particular year.
In the announcement of the PUBG Global Series on January 30th, 2020, PUBG Corp. announced the modifications for the Global Championship commencing from 2020 onwards.
The brand-new format has limited the number of teams competing in the Global Championship from thirty-two to sixteen and reintroduced a single-stage tournament format from the Global Invitational.
Qualification process of PUBG Global Championship
The qualification method has been improved, with the top four teams of the final Global Series event of the year receiving an immediate invite to the PGC, and the remaining twelve spots being selected based on the Global Series annual ranking.
The qualification process has been rubbed with the removal of the Global Series, and it is substituted by the PUBG Continental Series.
In 2020, PUBG will entertain a whole of 4 global events. After three PGS events, the PUBG Global Championship (PGC) 2020 will head the final event and conclude the most competent PUBG esports team.
A total of 32 teams will contest at all of the three PUBG Global Series events. The topmost four teams from the most recent global competition will automatically pass to the next event. The remaining 28 slots will be appointed to teams who engage in regional qualifiers in one of the six regions, including Korea, China, Japan, Europe, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific.
All PGS events will consist of three stages: Group Stage, Elimination Stage, and Grand Finals. The event will run for an entirety of 9 days. The top 12 teams (6 from every group) out of the 32 teams in Group Stage will proceed to the Grand Finals. Elimination Stage will be the last chance for 4 more teams to compete in the Grand Finals.
To win the 2020 PUBG World Champions, 16 teams will compete at PGC 2020. The top 4 teams from the last PGS event will automatically pass to the PGC. The remaining 12 places will be appointed to the highest-ranked teams based on the total points scored in the Grand Finals from all three PGS events.
The PUBG Global Series begins with PGS: Berlin, which takes place for two weeks in Messe Berlin from March 31 to April 12. Group Stage and Elimination Stage will commence from March 31 to April 5, succeeded by three days of Grand Finals commencing on April 10 to conclude the winner of the first PGS event. Regional Online Qualifier to secure slots at the PGS Berlin will be completed in March.
Over $3.5M has been allotted for the PGS, including the PUBG Global Championship ($2M), with every participating team being assured a minimum payout of $20K per contest for the first three events. That money will originate from a union of prize money and crowdfunding ventures.
$500K will be allocated for every of the PGS stops in 2020 and a prize pool that will ensure a minimum of $20K for each team per event. The PUBG Global Championship will see a prize pool award of $2M.
Additionally, a Pick’Em Challenge crowdfunding drive will proceed with event items, with 25% of all in-game item deals being given to pro teams through different methods. PUBG Corp. indicated last December that it would be adding new events and more revenue sharing.
Players and teams can presume to see more than just prize pool money as in-game items will be utilized to produce additional revenue streams.
